Guatemala is, as far as I’m concerned, one of the hidden gems of Latin America. Its landscape is covered in green hills and dotted with volcanoes at every turn, and oceanic Lake Atitlan is breathtaking from any angle. My journey began in the capitol city when my friend–a Native and dual citizen of Guatemala and the U.S. herself–picked me up in her rented car and we cruised to the UNESCO heritage town Antigua. From Antigua, we zipped (slowly, via bus) from the lake towns of Panajachel for ziplining to San Pedro for the nightlife to San Marcos for cliff diving. Back to Antigua, I explored the colorful city streets and took in a bird’s eye view of the city at Cerro de la Cruz (view of the cross).
